1) Introduction to Download Deputy
Welcome to Download Deputy, by Ilesa Software. Download Deputy lets you create lists of remote files for a batch download at a later time. Why is a batch downloading so important? Because it lets you do what you want with your time while your files download, without babysitting your Macintosh. Each file begins transferring as soon as the previous one finishes. Instead of staying with your computer for 50 minutes while that five megabyte file comes across the phone lines at less than optimal 1.7 Kb/sec, you can do errands, spend time with your kids, etc., letting Download Deputy manage the downloads. You can set it to logoff, quit, or even shut down your Mac once the transfers are complete.
2) New Features for Download Deputy 1.3
Since Download Deputy 1.0b11, we decided to completely redesign Download Deputy, to further enhance the user’s experience. Here’s a run-down of what’s new:
- Internal File Transfers: Now, you no longer need any helper programs to use Download Deputy. All file transfers are done internally, inside Download Deputy. This makes for faster, more elegant transfers.
- New Interface: Since Download Deputy 1.0b11, we changed the interface to a ‘tab’ interface much like Claris Emailer or Microsoft Word so we could keep everything organized, and in one small window.
- Error Logging: With previous versions of Download Deputy, there was no telling what happened to a transfer; that was all up to the error checking of the helper. Now that file transfers are internal, Download Deputy logs every error, and notifies the user when one occurs.
- Error Retrys: You can now tell Download Deputy how many times you want it to try to enter a FTP site. This is useful if a site is busy.
- HTTP Support: Now you can download http URLs with Download Deputy AND a helper program like Internet Explorer or Netscape. Unlike FTP URLs, these do not get handled internally by Download Deputy; you must use either Netscape or Internet Explorer.
- URL Grabber: Turning the URL Grabber on will add every FTP file URL you click on into Download Deputy’s queue. This is a fantastic feature, and greatly enhances Download Deputy’s usability. The two applications that support the URL Grabber are Netscape and MSIE.
See the detailed documentation for more information on these features.
New Features for Download Deputy 1.4
-Zillions of bugs have been fixed since version 1.3.1.
-Cmd-. now cancels a download session in progress.
-If an error occurs when attempting a file download, the blank file with no information written to it gets deleted. This didnt happen right before.
-Clicking “Go” downloads all FTP files, and then all HTTP files. There is no Cycle Programs anymore.
See the detailed documentation for more information on these features.
New Features for Download Deputy 1.5
-A few more obscure bugs have been fixed.

-When you select Paste from the Edit menu, and the cursor is in the URL field, the URL, user id, and password are are all placed into their correct fields.
New Features for Download Deputy 1.5.1
-A bug that occured when pasting URLs has been fixed.
3) Registration
A) Benefits - When you register, many of Download Deputy's features will be enabled. Here's what you get for $10.00 USD:
-File Lists can contain more than 2 files.
-Unlimited sessions available.
-Free tech support forever.
-Free software updates for 6 months.
-Upgrades afterwards are half-price.
B) How to Enter Your Serial Number
After you’ve sent your money to Kagi, and you have your serial number, you need to Register Download Deputy. To do this, select Register from the Apple menu. A dialog box will pop up, and you can enter your name and serial number. Your serial number is based off of your name, so you must enter your name exactly as stated in the email message you received, or Download Deputy will not register correctly.
Paying for Download Deputy is fairly simple. Open the Register program that accompanies Download Deputy. Enter your name, your email address, and the number of single user licenses you desire for each program you wish to purchase (or Site or Word-Wide licenses). Save or Copy or Print the data from the Register program and send the data and payment to Kagi Shareware. More specifics on the Register program to follow. Kagi Shareware handles our payment processing.
If paying with Credit Card or First Virtual, you can email or fax the data to Kagi Shareware.
Their email address is shareware@kagi.com and their fax number is +1 510 652-6589. You can
either Copy the data from Register and paste into the body of an email message or you can Save
the data to a file and you can attach that file to an email message. There is no need to compress the
data file, it's already pretty small. If you have a fax modem, just Print the data to the Kagi fax
number.
Payments sent via email are processed within 3 to 4 days. You will receive an email
acknowledgement when it is processed. Payments sent via fax take up to 10 days and if you
provide a correct internet email address you will receive an email acknowledgement.
If you are paying with Cash or USD Check you should print the data using the Register
application and send it to the address shown on the form, which is:
Kagi Shareware
1442-A Walnut Street #392-F9
Berkeley, California 94709-1405
USA
You can pay with a wide variety of cash from different countries but at present if you pay via
check, it must be a check drawn in US Dollars. Kagi Shareware cannot accept checks in other
currencies, because the conversion rate for non-USD checks is around USD 15 per check and that is just not practical.
If you have a purchasing department, you can enter all the data into the Register program and then
select Invoice as your payment method. Print three copies of the form and send it to your
accounts payable people. You might want to highlight the line that mentions that they must
include a copy of the form with their payment.
Kagi Shareware can not invoice your company, you need to act on my behalf and generate the
invoice and handle all the paperwork on your end.
Payments send via postal mail take time to reach Kagi Shareware and then up to 10 days for
processing. Again, if you include a correct email address, you will hear from Kagi Shareware
when the form is processed.
4) Quick Start Guide
Here is a quick list of steps to follow to get you quickly on your way:
A) Open Download Deputy.
B) Select the button that corresponds to the file type you are downloading. Click “http” for HTTP files, or “ftp” for FTP files. In the URL: box, type the path to the file you want to download. For example, http://www.ilesa.com/anon_ftp/download-deputy-14-ppc.hqx, or
ftp.kagi.com/ilesa/download-deputy-15-ppc.hqx (These are valid URLs)
C) To set the file to be downloaded anonymously (without a specific User ID and Password), hit the return key or click the Add URL button. The file will be added to the queue (the list of files to be downloaded). Skip to E.
D) If your file is an FTP file and you have a User ID and Password for the FTP site, enter the necessary information in the User ID and Password fields. Hit the return key to add the file to the queue.
E) Repeat steps B-D until you have completed the list of files. Until you REGISTER Download Deputy, you will only be able to create lists containing 2 or fewer files.
F) To begin your download, click on the button in the lower-right corner of the main window (alternatively, press command-B, or select Begin Download from the Deputy menu). (If you use a PPP connection to connect to the Internet, Download Deputy will now open it, if necessary.) Download Deputy will open the program you have selected and begin downloading.
5) System Requirements
If you are using the PowerPC version of Download Deputy:
A PowerPC Macintosh with System 7 OS Software installed and 4 MB of RAM
If you are using the 68K version of Download Deputy:
A Macintosh with at least a 68020 processor, System 7 OS Software installed, 3 MB of RAM
Optional software to make Download Deputy better:
Netscape Navigator 3.0 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0: To use Download Deputy’s incredible URL Grabber and to download HTTP files, you must have Netscape 3.0 or higher, or Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 or higher installed on your machine. Neither of these are necessary for regular FTP file downloading.
Internet Config: Download Deputy’s ‘Go to DD Home...” item of the ‘Deputy’ menu uses Internet Config to launch your preferred browser and open the Download Deputy home page.
Stuffit Expander: Selecting the “Auto-Expand Files” option in the Options section requires that you have Stuffit Expander installed. To expand and decode most internet archives, you will also need the Expander Enhancer component that comes free with DropStuff.
6) Detailed Documentation
A) Working with the File Queue - This is the first step in creating a list of files to download. To add a file to the queue, type the file's location in the URL: field, and if necessary, enter a User ID and Password in the User ID: and Password: fields. Press the return key while the cursor is in any one of these three fields, or click the Add URL button, and the file will be added to the queue.
To save you some time, you can also click on the Get URL button (alternatively, press command-g, or select Get URL from the Deputy menu), to transfer the URL currently in the Location: field of the front-most window of Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer to the URL: field of Download Deputy. (Keep in mind that Download Deputy does not yet support transferring files whose URL begins with http://.) Edit the information, if necessary, and press return to add the file to the queue.
If you will be downloading similar files or files from the same directory, you can select Duplicate Previous from the Edit menu (alternatively, press command-d), to reenter the information from the previous file into the URL:, User ID:, and Password: fields. After you have edited the information, press return to add the file to the queue.
If you realize you have accidentally incorrectly entered the information for a file already in the queue, double-click the file in the queue. In the File Information window that appears, you can edit the file's information.
If you decide you no longer want to download one of the files in the queue, select that file by clicking on it once, and then click on the Delete Item button (alternatively, press command-, or select Delete Item from the Deputy menu).
To clear the entire queue, click once on the Clear Queue button (alternatively, press command-', or select Clear Queue from the Deputy menu).
B) Setting Download Locations - To set the default downloads folder, click on the Options... tab to bring up the Options section. Here you can set the default downloads folder by clicking in the white field above the "(Click to Change)" text, and selecting the location. By default, all files in the queue will be downloaded to this location.
However, Download Deputy can also download individual files to other locations. After a file has been added to the queue, double-clicking on it brings up the File Information window, which lets you specify a destination for that individual file. Note: Changing the save as: field for an FTP file does not affect the file’s name. The save as: feature only works for HTTP files.
C) Specifying Download Times - Normally, you start a download by clicking on the button in the lower-right corner of the Download Deputy main window. Should you want Download Deputy to download your files at a specific time without user intervention, in the middle of the night, for example, you can do this by clicking on the Options... tab. In the Options window, you can set a specific date and time for a download session. You must first check the Specify download time check box. Now, in the Date: field, enter a date (MM/DD/YY), and in the Time: field, enter a time (HH/MM in 12 hour format) and use the pop-up menu to select AM or PM.
D) Working with Multiple File Lists - Until you register Download Deputy, you cannot work with more than one list of files. However, in the registered version, you can create multiple lists of files to be downloaded. For example, if you specify a date and time far into the future for files in one list to be downloaded, you can save that list and work with another one in the meantime. To save a file list, select Save List... from the File menu. To open a previously saved list, select Open List... from the File menu. If you select Open List... before you have saved the list you are currently working with, you will be notified by dialogue box that asks you if you want to Discard the current list, Save the current list, or Cancel the operation of opening a different list.
E) Post-downloading Options
You can set Download Deputy to automatically disconnect your PPP connection (if applicable), Auto-Expand files with Stuffit Expander, quit itself, and/or shut down your Mac. To set these options, click on the Options... tab in the main window. In the Options section that appears, check or uncheck the post-download items. Please note: disconnecting PPP does not quit Download Deputy; and quitting Download Deputy does not disconnect PPP. However, shutting down the computer DOES both quit Download Deputy and disconnect PPP.
